February is Full of History

Posted on January 30, 2018

Honor local and national history this month while visiting sights throughout Lincoln's Indiana Boyhood Home. The month of February celebrates Black History Month in the United States. This month commemorates the significant achievements and historic events of African Americans in the United States dating back to 1915 when the 13th Amendment abolished slavery in the U.S. Coincidently enough, the month of February also celebrates Abraham Lincoln's birthday. Abe Lincoln spent his boyhood years in the woods of Spencer County, Indiana. It was here that Abe grew from a young boy into the man that would one day lead this great nation. It was also here that Abe launched a flatboat trip to New Orleans where he saw slavery for the first time. Lincoln had a great hand in helping to end slavery in the United States through the efforts of the Civil War and the Emancipation Proclamation.  Visit the Lincoln Bicentennial Plaza inside Lincoln State Park to learn more about this great leader. Learn what life was like for the Lincoln family back in the 1800s at Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial. The museum inside the Visitor's Center tells the story of Lincoln's time in Indiana, and how the 14 years he lived here shaped his guiding values and morals. Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial There are also several other sites dedicated to Lincoln's years in southern Indiana throughout the area. Help to commemorate Black History Month and Lincoln's Birthday throughout Spencer County, Indiana, and learn about the life of Abraham Lincoln.

"Whenever I hear any one arguing for slavery I feel a strong impulse to see it tried on him personally" ~ Abraham Lincoln
