Lessons Learned While Serving

Posted on May 28, 2015

Sometimes, great stories are right in front of you. That was literally the case when I noticed a “Throwback Thursday” photo posted on Instagram last week. Philadelphia native Gabrielle recounted her experience of volunteering at Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial and allowed us to share her inspiring story: “While our team of seven was serving at the Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial for a few weeks to get rid of invasive plant species throughout the park and relocate and create split rail fence, we were also able to take some time in the morning to assist one of the national park rangers on flag duty. She taught us how to unfold the flag and raise the flag up on the pole without the having the flag ever touch the ground. She also taught us how to fold the flag back with the blue and stars showing! We even got a little tour of where all the old and rugged flags were and she explained the process of how they get rid of the old flags with respect for the nation.” “For me, I know I will never forget this moment/experience. Joining AmeriCorps because I love being of service to others and wanted to explore more of my country, I was able to serve at the Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial. I was able to live on location and tour the town that the 16th President once walked and lived. I’ve learned so much about American history and pioneer lifestyle skills. Having this experience especially has been a sort of motivation for me to want to explore all that my city has to offer and learn all about the history that is there. Philadelphia is my home. Rich in history and love. Yet, I’ve hardly ever realized how important it is to truly discover the gems of the city. I thank AmeriCorps NCCC for helping motivate me to want to engage more in my city and to become a better citizen for my country!”
