Middle Child Day

Posted on August 12, 2016

We take any chance we can to celebrate all things Lincoln around here, and here is something few may know. Today is Middle Child Day. What does that have to do with Lincoln, you ask? Abraham Lincoln was a middle child! Defying the stereotypical syndromes which befall many middle children, Abe grew to be successful and well respected. Rising from humble beginnings to the president of the United States, he gave credence to hard work, perseverance, compassion, and honesty. Unfortunately, Abe’s older sister, Sarah, and younger brother, Thomas, did not live to see him become the man who would change a nation. Thomas was born when Abe was around three-years-old, but only lived three days. Sarah helped care for Abe after their mother died, but passed away after giving birth when Abe was around 19 years old. There are several places you can visit and see how Lincoln and his family lived as he grew from age seven to twenty-one. This is where he was shaped into a great man who is still admired today. The Lincoln Pioneer Village & Museum has 14 replica Lincoln-era cabins to explore, including a one-room schoolhouse. Lincoln State Park offers many trails, as well as the Bicentennial Plaza which celebrates Lincoln’s 200th birthday. Explore the museum and visit the Living Historical Farm at the Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial. For a list of all local Lincoln attractions, visit our webiste.
