Posted on February 2, 2010

The Spencer County Tourism Commission elected officers for 2010 at its January meeting.

The following officers were elected: President, Mary Jeanne Schumacher of Saint Meinrad Archabbey; Vice-President, Paula Werne of Holiday World & Splashin' Safari; Secretary, Gay Ann Harney, Spencer County Clerk, and Treasurer Larry May of Santa's Lodge, St. Nick's Restaurant.

Members of the tourism commission are appointed by the Spencer County Board of Commissioners, Spencer County Council and one member is appointed by the Mayor of Rockport, as the largest municipality in the county.

Other current Tourism Commission members are Dave Lovell of Lake Rudolph Campground & RV Resort, Kevin Klosowski owner of Santa's Candy Castle, and Gene Steinkamp, a board member of the Spencer County Chamber of Commerce.

The Spencer County Tourism Commission was established in 1994 to oversee the expenditures of proceeds collected by the county's innkeeper's tax, which is currently set at four percent of gross lodging receipts. The mission of the Spencer County Tourism commission is to make Spencer County a leading year-round overnight destination for group, family, and senior travel in the Midwest.

Tourism has a tremendous impact on Spencer County, providing one in three jobs and generating approximately $161.7 million in spending by the visitors within the county. The Visitors Bureau brings guests into the county to stay overnight and visit the county attractions, shopping places and sites.
