When Work is Fun

Posted on January 28, 2016

Who doesn’t like to have fun? We certainly do! And, luckily, the tourism industry is a pretty fun area to work in. Since it’s “Fun at Work Day” we thought we’d share some of what we find the most fun about our jobs here at the Visitors Bureau. Julie says, “It's fun to be sitting at my desk and hear the reactions of kids walking by outside when they see Santa, or Santa sneaks up on them. It's also pretty interesting to hear people talk about where they are traveling to, but took a detour once they see the Santa Claus, Indiana sign on the interstate.” When asked about the most fun parts of her job, Amanda says, “Getting to share the story of how the town of Santa Claus was named with first-time visitors and talking with families who bring generation after generation to our town. I also love that frozen hot chocolate is easily accessible during the summer with a quick trip to Santa's Candy's Castle!” And then we ventured out to see what some of our tourism colleagues love about their jobs. It’s fun to hear about the little, and big, things that making working in the tourism industry so enjoyable. Sharon from the Rockport Comfort Inn & Suites says she likes meeting interesting people who talk about their travels and jobs. She also enjoys working with a staff of wonderful people. Mary Jeanne works at the Saint Meinrad Archabbey and told us about how a few times each year, the office gets together to do a potluck lunch. Since there are nearly 20 people, they divide into two teams and the teams take turns hosting lunch. Sometimes there’s a theme, such as “Black and White” or “Appetizers and Desserts.” She says it’s a lot of fun and delicious, too. Not everyone gets to be an elf but for Emily, it’s one of the most fun parts of her job. “Not only am I a museum director, I’m also an Elf! The town of Santa Claus, Indiana, receives tens of thousands of letters from children around the world during the holidays. Santa is just so busy that time of year that he needs some help answering all that mail. It is so much fun to help Santa respond to funny questions and scores of Christmas wishes.” “For the first time in my professional career, my passion for promoting, marketing, and public relations, has aligned with my passion for the arts and entertainment. Every day, I’m fortunate enough to work on something that I, quite literally, love to do," says Marc at Lincoln Amphitheatre. “Plus, the challenge of doing something – creating a performance series that, while inclusive of the Lincoln drama, also offers a variety of programming – that, ultimately, will help maximize the amphitheatre’s functionality and presence in our community… not only in 2016, but for many years to come.”
