First Day of Summer

Posted on June 20, 2019

June 21 marks the official first day of summer this year.

So why not get outside and celebrate with some fun, seasonal activities? Take advantage of the warmth and the sunshine of the season. Try one of these five festive ways to rejoice!

1. Pick fruits

This is the perfect time to pick fresh fruits to enjoy in a glass full of lemonade for a bright, refreshing summer drink. Lakeview Orchard in Rockport is known for their juicy peaches. Matter of fact, nearby, Pepper’s Ridge Winery uses Lakeview peaches to make their sweet peach wine.

Or turn it into a tasty treat by adding to a bowl of vanilla ice cream or try a new recipe, like this one from the Food Network.

2. Take a hike

Getting enough exercise is important at any age. Celebrate the official start of summer by getting outside to enjoy a nice hike. There are lots of trails to explore including over two miles of hiking trails throughout Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial. Lincoln State Park features 10 miles of hiking trails, plus two scenic lakes.

3. Dine outside

Having your meals outside is a seasonal way to celebrate. Grab a juicy burger and creamy milkshake at Fat Daddy’s Grill & Chill. Or stop by Monkey Hollow Winery and Distillery and sit outside on the patio while tasting award-winning wines and locally produced meats and cheeses. Here is a list of all restaurants in the area.

4. Experience "Here I Grew Up"

Learn about President Lincoln’s 14 formative years right here in southern Indiana during a new musical production at the Lincoln Amphitheatre inside Lincoln State Park. The majestic 1,500-seat theater is located in the very woods Mr. Lincoln walked as a boy. Get your tickets before they sell out!

5. Enjoy Christmas

It is Christmas all the time in Santa Claus, Indiana! Celebrate the warmer weather by exploring this small town. Cool off with some frozen hot chocolate from Santa’s Candy Castle, learn how the town got its name at the Santa Claus Museum & Village, browse thousands of ornaments at the Santa Claus Christmas Store, and much more!
