Former State Tourism Director to Lead Spencer County Tourism Vision

Posted on March 2, 2010

The Spencer County Tourism Commission has hired former Indiana Tourism Director John Goss to facilitate the development of a strategic vision for travel and tourism in the county.

Goss became very familiar with Spencer County's tourism industry during his decade-long tenure as Director of the Indiana Tourism Division. He currently serves as the Executive Director of the Indiana Wildlife Federation. He also previously served as Director of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

In his position as Indiana Tourism Director, Goss helped create a three-state partnership to promote the Lincoln Heritage Trail in Kentucky, Indiana and Illinois. He was also supportive in the development of the Ohio River Scenic Route, which links all of the river communities and experiences in Indiana, Ohio and Illinois.

With the Spencer County Tourism Commission and Visitors Bureau staff, Goss will help craft a strategic vision to develop and market Spencer County as a leading year-round destination in the Midwest. During this process Goss will meet with the Tourism Commission several times to discuss its mission and vision. He will also facilitate five focus group sessions including all county attractions, accommodations, regional partners and interested community organizations and members.

"Tourism in Spencer County has a bright future," says Goss. "This strategic plan will provide a roadmap to build momentum for tourism jobs and improved quality of life for all residents of Spencer County."

The Spencer County Tourism Commission was established in 1994 to oversee the expenditures of proceeds collected by the county's innkeeper's tax, which is currently set at four percent of gross lodging receipts. Tourism's economic impact in Spencer County includes providing one in three jobs and generating approximately $161.7 million in spending by visitors within the county.

The Visitors Bureau encourages guests to stay overnight and visit the county attractions, shops and restaurants. For more information about the Spencer County Visitors Bureau, or Spencer County as a year-round destination, call (888) 444-9252 or visit www.legendaryplaces.org.
