Have a Happy (and Harmless!) Halloween

It’s the (second) most wonderful time of the year around here: Halloween season! And we all love a good scare on Halloween, but not when it involves our children and their safety. Parents should always take these simple precautions to ensure that their little pumpkins are safe during Halloween festivities:

• Avoid tripping hazards by making sure costumes are ankle-length, or shorter.
• In case unexpected events occur, carry a flashlight with you.
• Write your child’s name and your cell phone number on a tag or wristband in case they become separated from you. You can attach the tag to their costume or make a simple DIY wristband.
• Decorate costumes and treat bags with reflective tape or stickers.
• Choose face paint and makeup over masks, which can obstruct a child’s vision.
• Have kids carry a flashlight or glow sticks in their treat bags. This will help them to see and to be seen by others.
• If your child’s costume includes accessories such as pretend swords, wands, etc., the accessories should be short, soft, and flexible.
• Stay away from homemade treats while trick-or-treating; eat only factory-wrapped candy.
