Like Father, Like Son

Posted on June 16, 2015

“My father taught me to work, but not to love it. I never did like to work, and I don't deny it. I'd rather read, tell stories, crack jokes, talk, laugh -- anything but work.” – Abraham Lincoln Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial Chief Interpreter Mike Capps explains the impact Abe’s father, Thomas Lincoln, had on the man who became the nation’s 16th president. “Thomas Lincoln passed along a lot of personality traits. He had a reputation around the local community for being a very honest man,” Mike said. While Abe may not have loved to work, his father instilled awareness for craftsmanship. “Thomas Lincoln passed along a lot of practical knowledge to Abraham in terms of how to build furniture and how to care for the frontier farm,” Mike noted. Visitors to Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial can catch a glimpse of what the frontier life entailed when they visit Living Historical Farm.
