How to Travel on National Tourism Day

This day is observed during National Travel and Tourism Week in the United States, which occurs the first full week of May each year. National Travel and Tourism Week was first celebrated in May 1983, as President Ronald Reagan signed a proclamation encouraging all citizens to observe the week.

There are lots of things to do around town! Here are a few suggestions and places to check out on Tourism Day.

  1. Begin your day with festive shopping at Santa’s TOYS, Evergreen Boutique & Christmas Shop, the Santa Claus Christmas Store, and much more! Find out what is open when.
  2. Take a walk and breathe the fresh air at Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial. One of the favorite local trails is the Trail of Twelve Stones.
  3. Just right across the street is Lincoln State Park. There are 2,026 acres to explore. An exciting adventure is walking to the fire tower and climbing to the top.
  4. All that exercise is probably working up an appetite and thirst. Stop by Monkey Hollow Winery and Distillery to enjoy a complimentary tasting of award-winning wines, sample newly released distilled spirits, and find locally produced meats and cheeses.
  5. Stop by one of the charming, local restaurants. The Rustic or The Chateau offer a home-town country feel. The Chateau has family dining with a salad bar and a full menu of home-cooked items as well as a sports bar. The Rustic features seating next to a fire pit to enjoy a game on the big screen or a set of golf at the course right in front of the restaurant.
  6. There are lots to do on National Tourism Day in our area. Make it an overnight getaway at any of these unique accommodations.

The more you travel and explore the more you learn and gain experience. Spend this Tourism Day taking an adventure near or far! Use the My Trip Planner tool to plan your ideal itinerary.
